CPE 101

Fall 2008

Basic study tips:

Don't forget your reading assignments!  You should take notes on your readings as you go.   By now, you should have read over chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 (and, don't forget the first four pages of 12.1).   Review all these notes, paying special attention to anything you do not understand.  See the tutors or come to office hours to clear up any confusion.

Do ALL the "quick check" exercises in each chapter we've covered, it is a simple, quick review of the major concepts and will suggest vocabulary words you must know.  Also work on the "review questions" - probably best with a study partner, to clear up any questions (or to raise them!) from each chapter.

Once you've reviewed our textbook, or if you're starting to get confused about something, it is good to look over C topics in other textbooks.   You might also look at K&R (Kernighan and Ritchie) in its early chapters, and you can also clear up your understanding by "experiment" with simple programs on your own computer at to see how various statements in C affect program behavior.

Keep your vocabulary words list up to date and maintain it according to the words we use in lecture and the words you encounter in the text or in other conversations about computing.  Jot down definitions of each of them as you come across them.  Make sure you understand the terms we use commonly in class.

Review your notes carefully and look over the homework, labs and programming assignments, especially where you've had trouble.  Come to office hours or see the tutors about any such questions you have as early as you can.
