An introduction to KADS22 functionality

by Suzanne Kabel and Anjo Anjewierden

KADS22 provides an interactive graphical interface (much like the familiar Windows programs) with the following functionality: parsing of CML2 files, pretty-printing, hypertext browsing, generation of the graphical notation, search, glossary generation and HTML generation.

KADS22 consists of several tools: Explorer, Pretty-printer and Grapher. The Explorer is opened when KADS22 is started. From the Explorer the other tools can be opened.

Explorer

The Explorer is a browse tool like Windows Explorer. It is automatically invoked when KADS22 is started. The basic functionality is:

Buttons in the Explorer

Save contents to file

Go back or forward

Show as ASCII or ECO

Check on errors in the selected file and parse the selected file

Open Pretty print, Grapher, or Glossary tool

Pretty printer

The pretty printer is an ``ontology formatting facility''. To open the Pretty-printer: select the file that you want to pretty print in the index window (left window) in the Explorer and press the   button in the menubar.

The Pretty-printer enables the user to

Grapher

The Grapher is an ``ontology drawing tool''. To open the Grapher: select the file that you want to edit graphically in the index window (left window) in the Explorer and press the   button in the menubar.

The Grapher enables the user to

Show trace back selection

The file structure (left window) shows a "trace-back" view.

The file structure (left window) shows a "Has-part" hierarchy

The grapher window (upper right window) shows a task decomposition view

Inference structure

The grapher window (upper right window) shows an inference structure view

Set shape size

A dialogue appears where the schape size of entities in the grapher window (upper right window) can be controlled.

Popup menu's in the Grapher

Each type of entity that can be created in the upper right window of the grapher has a popup menu indicating the type of entity (for example a CML concept), and a number of additional menu options. The figure of the grapher above shows the popup menu that belongs to a concept.
