CPE/CSC 580 Spring 2001 Assignment 2: AI + KM Concepts

The goal of this homework is to gain some experience with the organization of knowledge through concept maps. These maps and related approaches (topic maps, mind maps) consist of nodes and links that are arranged into a graph, and displayed in a visually appealing manner. The tool to be used for this exercise is the IHMC Concept Mapping Software toolset developed at the University of West Florida, and available from http://cmap.coginst.uwf.edu/. Your task is to select a topic from the domain of Artificial Intelligence (ideally closely related to Knowledge Management), and develop a concept map for this topic. Your map should be structured roughly as follows:

a primary concept map shows the topic together with the most important concepts (not more than can be viewed comfortably on one page)
links providing further information from each concept in the primary map
these links can point to further, secondary concept maps, or to text descriptions, Web pages, images, or other documents.
links between concepts should be labeled in such a way that the labels of the concepts together with the link can be read as rudimentary sentences.

This homework contributes 50 points out of 100 in total for the assignments in this class. The deadline for the homework is Thursday, June 7, in class. Please submit a printout of your map, and send me a file with the map via email.

I am planning to use the following evaluation scheme:

coverage (number of concepts, information about concepts) 30

logical organization (relationships between concepts, choice of labels) 10

presentation (graphical arrangement of the items) 10

One concept together with explanatory information will count for about two points, so you should have about 15 concepts with explanations. Not all concepts need to be at the top level. You can also have more concepts, and omit the explanatory information for some of them.
