1.5.6. CyberMatrix Class Scheduler
Cybermatrix is a software company that has created several moderately used softwares. Per the lack of testimonials on the CyberMatrix website, Class Scheduler is one of their lesser known products, and is targeted towards smaller schools that can't afford more expensive enterprise scheduling tools.
Good Features:
-
Multiple schedule views. Schedules are viewable by room, by class, by instructor, and by student.
-
Contains a very simple reporting UI that allows the user to display and filter the data with SQL statements. This can be cumbersome for many end users, but quite useful for users that are more technical.
-
The end-user can schedule reports to be automatically delivered to a group of e-mail addresses at a certain time of day.
-
Very simple, light-weight application which does not require much CPU or processing power compared to the other applications. Some of the other softwares, such as EMS Campus, require a seperate database server running Microsoft SQL Server 2008+.
-
Much cheaper than the other applications due to the smaller scale.
-
Contains the ability to bulk-import schedules from csv. This isn't necessarily a core feature that we're interested in, but it does save data-entry time.
-
The database does contain fields for instructor priority and availability, although these must be entered by the software administrator rather than the instructor.
Bad Features:
-
The application does not use make use of a robust back-end database management system like SQL Server, MySQL, or Oracle. There could be severe issues when multiple people are making edits to the software at once.
-
Every small option takes up an entire screen or tab. This means that the user has to click several times and make several transitions just to make a small change, which can be very cumbersome.
-
The UI for this application is very plain, and doesn't look extremely professional. It almost seems like it's using the default color scheme for Visual Basic applications.
-
Lacking in features and options. This application is by far the least robust of the softwares we reviewed.
Missing Features:
-
This application is desktop based and usable only on Windows, which is a problem for much of our established userbase.
-
Lacks the ability to auto-generate a schedule using a sophisticated algorithm.
-
Does not contain the ability for professors to input their preferences.
-
Lacks the ability for student input.
-
Not extremely easy to interface with other systems. You will have to work with flat files to migrate data over.
-
Can't roll forward the schedule from a previous quarter.
