1.5.6. Arel Spotlight
Arel Spotlight is a universal conferencing software solution that provides
enhanced communication tools, primarily for the business world. Even though
this is a software solution designed for corporate training applications, there
are some features missing for the application of the university classroom
environment.
The Good:
-
Up to 16 video windows.
-
Near FM audio quality for voice interaction.
-
Collaborative interaction using a whiteboard, chat, application sharing, instant
yes/no polling, questions and surveys.
-
A wide variety of content types supported including: MS PowerPoint, MS Excel,
MS Word, Macromedia Flash animations, JPG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, WMV, AVI, WAV, MP3,
and more.
-
A moderator can remotely view and control an attendee's desktop or any open
application of an application sharing session.
-
Moderators can hand over presentation capabilities to any attendee in order to
lead the session.
-
Session recording.
The Bad:
-
Does not allow the student to browse the lecture.
-
Collapsible hierarchy of talking points is limited to what MS Office provides; therefore the hierarchy would have to be static.
-
Polls surveys and questions are limited to a yes/no response.
-
Voice interaction is not controlled by a moderator.
-
Ability to conference over a telephone is unnecessary for a classroom environment.
The Missing
-
no attendance roster management.
-
no layered note taking.
-
no database of test questions to share with a department.
-
no Linux/Macintosh compatibility.
-
no interaction with other instructors at all; no tools to collaborate notes, lectures, or tests with other instructors.
