1.5.1 Claroline

Claroline was created in 2001 by the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium. It was developed to help teachers give extra learning experiences to students who could not be in class at the scheduled times. All the information on Claroline is available to all students at all times. Students can take practice quizzes, review notes, chat with other students and view calendars of important events.

When one logs into Claroline, they are greated with a simple login page that allows users to login or to search for classes. Once logged in, a user has a multitude of options. They can view their course list, create a course, enroll in a course or drop a course. Within each course there are many places a student can spend their time. There are exercises such as tests and quizzes, forums, assignments and a calendar to organize important dates.

Where Claroline is lacking is the in class demonstrations that is the basis of our Eclass product. Claroline does not take roll for the class nor does it allow the teacher to, in real time, instruct the students in his/her class. All the functionality in Claroline seems to be based on supplementing the in class learning experience rather than enhancing it.
