1.4. Impacts

The potential positive impacts of the Grader include increased efficiency, productivity, and ease of use. Grader resembles most existing grading software; however, its unique additional functionalities such as "what if", interactive graphs, integrated electronic hand-in of student work, and more customizable options provide the students and the instructors with flexiblility and efficiency. The ease of use that comes with a more interactive and powerful grading software encourages instructors and students to stay organized and updated on grades.

The negative potential impacts mainly involve privacy issues. The Grader has a large amount of sensitive information from personal information to grades. Although schools can disclose student information without consent, students with FERPA protection may hold the University and the individuals involved in the information leaks liable. Two other security issues deal with the danger of a student changing electronic hand-in dates to allow late work with no penalty and the possible interception of grades when transferred among local and server machines. Additionally, if the Grader is poorly implemented, the software may calculate grades incorrectly or lose data and hinder the productivity and efficiency of the user. If any of these problems manifest, the software becomes unreliable.
