2.3.1 Adding a New Course

Assuming that the course database is empty, the course window appears as shown below in Figure 2.3.1-1. To add a new course, simply press the "New" button located at the bottom of this window. When this feature is selected, a new window will appear.

This is the Add/Edit a Course window and assuming that the course database is empty, it will appear as shown below in Figure 2.3.1-2.

Figure 2.3.1-2: Add/Edit Course Window

This new window is where the user inputs all the necessary information about the new course. The information needed is as follows:

Title- This is simply the title of the course, for example "csc 101".

Description- Here is where the course description, for example "Programming Basics I" for csc 101.

Units- These are the number of units that students receive after taking this class, for example "4".

WTUs- Work Time Units that the Instructor receives from teaching this course. (Usually 4 or 5).

Schedule Types- These are drop down menus where the user can select the type of schedule (or "Time Arrangements") that this course will have, for example classes Monday, Wednesday, Friday with labs right after, or Tuesday and Thursday, etc. What schedules are available for the certain class depend on the WTUs. When a certain schedule type is not available, it will be grayed out and not able to be selected. The three separate drop down menus are for the user to define up to three different Time Arrangements that the schedule generator can use to create a schedule. For more information about schedule generation, please view Generating an Initial Schedule.

Notes- This last text field is available for any additional notes that the user wants to keep for this course.

After the user is done inputting all the necessary information, the OK button will save the data, and bring you back to the Course window. The new course now appears on the first line of the courses list as shown below in figure 2.3.1-3.

To keep adding more courses and create a full list of courses for the quarter, simply keep following the same steps as show above for adding a new course. When an entire list of courses is in the course database, the Course Window looks something like shown below in Figure 2.3.1-4.
