1.3. Operational Setting

There are two operational settings for the Test Tool: (1) normal use as a functioning software system for in home or office by students and instructors; (2) use as a formal in class testing procedure.

The Test Tool is designed to be used in the Cal Poly Computer Science Department as a means of testing the CS students.  It is also designed to work in other departments on the Cal Poly campus, as well as other universities or educational institutions.  The software can be used from any computer with it installed, just as long as they are part of the class and have access to the test. Teachers can create a test, from the office or from home, in which students can then take on the Internet from their home or where ever they have Internet access.  The other setting it is designed for is in a controlled classroom in a proctored testing environment.

For use as a formal in class testing procedure, it would work in place of the situation in which students are limited to taking the test under the normal circumstances of a regular pen and paper test. The setting for which it is appropriately suited is a class equipped with enough computers to have one for every student in the class, as well as having a proctor to start the exams and end them at the planned time. The system interfaces with what is currently set up in the classroom, and would use current CSC/CPE standards for turning in and submitting assignments for the tests.
