Each of these systems provides a wide variety of test-making and test-taking functionality. In terms of such functionality, the goal for the Test Tool is to provide features that make online test taking more like test-taking in a classroom environment as well as features that make on and offline test creation simple. The Test Tool does provide modest functional improvements in three areas, when compared to most commercially available tools. These improvements are:

  1. more flexibility in question types, specifically, programming questions
  2. more options for test taking, including printed paper tests
  3. more options for generating tests from previous questions

The goals for the Test Tool relating to public domain source code and sound pedagogical development are not met by any of the above commercial systems.
