Hasmik Gharibyan was born, raised and educated in Armenia, one of 15 republics of the USSR. She got her higher education at Yerevan State University. She graduated from the university with honors in 1981, receiving M.S. in Applied Mathematics, and was offered a faculty position in her own department. In 1991 she received her Scientific Degree "Candidate of Physics and Mathematical Sciences" (equivalent to Ph.D. in the USA), specialty: Computational Mathematics. Hasmik Gharibyan taught in the Applied Mathematics (now Informatics) department of Yerevan State University for 15 years (1981-1996) -- first as an Assistant Professor, then as an Associate Professor.
In 1996 Hasmik Gharibyan moved to the USA. In 1998 she joined the faculty of Computer Science department at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo; currently she is a Full Professor in this department.
