CPE 357: Milestones
CPE 357: Milestones
Scores, Ranking, and Current Class Grade
Your assignment scores, class ranking, and current class grade to-date
will be published at important milestones during the quarter for your review.
They are provided so that you can verify that I have recorded the correct
scores and so you'll know how you are doing and can make any adjustments
necessary to increase your chances of earning the grade you want for the class.
The milestone results are provided as a .csv (comma separated value) file that
you can access with your web browser and will contain the following:
- Your scores for all assignments whose last due date has passed. The
last milestone of the quarter will also contain scores, if any, for any
assignments that remain open which, typically, is the last two projects.
- Your current class ranking, from 1-to-N, where N is the number of
students enrolled in all of my CPE 357 sections.
- Two estimates of your current class grade, one based on a traditional
curve (100%-90%: A/A-, 89%-80%: B+/B/B-, 79%-70%: C+/C/C-, 69%-60%:
D+/D/D-, 59%-0%: F) and the other based on your class rank (1 to the
number of students in the class). Both grade estimates take your grade
eligibilty as described in the Syllabus into
account.
Your current class grade is the higher of the two grades,
curved or ranked.
- Be aware that early in the quarter the curve-based grade is
often the higher of the two grades but at the end of the quarter the
rank-based grade is higher for some students. This is due to the
to the fact that many students find the later assignments more challenging
and, consequently, earn lower scores as the quarter progresses.
- That means you'll want to pay special attention to your rank-based
grade during the quarter because it is often the better indicator of
your eventual class grade.
The Last Milestone - An Important Opportunity!
- At the last milestone of the quarter you may accept your current
class grade WITHOUT completing any additional work. Barring any
significant error(s) being discovered in the grading your grade will not
go down even if others go on to complete additional work to improve their
grade and you don't.
- You may improve your class grade after the last milestone by completing
or improving your scores on any still-open assignments.
Here are the links to your milestone results along with the target dates
for them to be published - be sure to let me know ASAP if you believe there
are any errors in the recorded scores!

- Milestone 2 (target publishing date: 5:00pm, Wednesday, May 12)
