Upcoming Events

Check out these great ways to get involved and make an impact on the community:

Lionel's Trees

Lionel's Trees is a tree planting effort run by Lionel Johnston on the Central Coast of California. Lionel plants trees to prevent soil erosion, to provide shade, to enhance natural surroundings and to absorb CO2 that's released from the burning of fossil fuel. His dedication shows because he's outside daily, watering, gathering seeds or planting trees, often with his own dollars. His goal is to plant 1000 trees a year.

SWE can help Lionel reach this goal by participating in a tree planting event on Saturday, November 15th. We will meet at Campus Market at 10 am and spend about 2 hours planting seeds on campus. Feel free to contact Courtney Ward at ceward@calpoly.edu if you have any questions.

Buiding an Engineer Day

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008
See the BAE section of the website and contact Kendra at krowley@calpoly.edu for more information and with questions.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

Upcoming in November

Big/Little Sibs

The Big Sib/Little Sib program is a program that pairs incoming female freshmen engineers with an older engineering student mentor. The mentors then help their "Liitle Sib" by:
  • helping them choose classes
  • answering dorm questions
  • introducing them to college life
  • telling them what classes are like
The Big Sib is there to help their Little Sib through the transition into college and remains a mentor throughout the whole year.

The program starts over the summer, so that we can pair the freshmen with a mentor before school starts. Then, once school starts, we have "Big Sib/Little Sib" get togethers so that the freshmen can meet other female engineers in their year as well as meet other older engineers in their major. We try to have these get togethers about once a quarter, but we may try to make more of them next year.

If you are interested in being a big sib, please email Randi at rshiromi@calpoly.edu and tell her your major and how many little sibs you would like.

Past Events

We had some awesome outreach events this past year including:

Relay for Life

This event was on May 17, 2008 - many SWE members raised money for cancer research and participated in the 24 hour event. The team rased a total of $1,760.

Girl-Scout Day

This event on May 17, 2008 was a huge success. Girl Scouts came to Cal Poly to participate in several labs in order to learn about engineering. They left with engineering badges and some fantastic experiences!

Building an Engineer

A day long event on October 20, 2007 where the students can attend four workshops to learn about engineering.

Big Sib/Lil Sib

This year, incoming female engineering students were paired up with current Cal Poly students so that they could get advice on registering for classes, finding housing, and other aspects of starting out at college.

Fourth Grade Days

As a part of National Engineer's Week, SWE visited fourth grade classrooms at several elementary schools to talk about careers in engineering and to present hands-on engineering activities.

Hot Cocoa/Birthday Kit Night

Thanks to all of those who donated items for the Birthday Kits that were sent to the Women's Shelter in SLO. Everyone had a chance to make an impact, while having a good time drinking hot cocoa and learning valuable resume tips from a Boeing recruiter.

High School Shadow

High School shadow took place November 1st and 2nd as well as April 18th and 19th. This program pairs high school students with Cal Poly engineering students to spend the day "shadowing" an engineering student. The day begins with an introduction meeting in the University Union, and then the high school students attend classes and labs with an assigned Cal Poly engineering student. After lunch is provided to the students, a discussion and question and answer session follows. Shadow an Engineering Student day provides high school students the opportunity to learn first hand about engineering and college life.
