572 Final Project

Improving Laser Scanning Techniques

Overview

My final project is to test the impact of reflectivity and refraction on laser scanning images using a program called Next Engine 3D Scanner. The number of scans per rotation of the object determines the resolution and size of the data set. My data set consists of two sets of 10 scans; each set of scans is a different orientation of the object to minimize the number of holes. Each individual scan is put together to create a 10 scan composite of the object in one specific orientation. Using multiple angles for each set of scans will fill the holes created in the previous set but add much more data as a result. To put the laser scanning process into perspective, one 360 degree rotation of 10 individual scans takes approximately 12.8 minutes.
