1.3. Operational Setting

This tool will primarily be designed for the Cal Poly Computer Science department. Secondarily, the tool could be used by the rest of the Cal Poly campus if the Computer Science department is pleased with the end result. From there, the grader can be spread to other universities if there is enough positive reception for it.

The current tool in use is an old software engineering project that has no graphical elements, but utilized many of the features that Dr. Fisher has described to us. Additionally, PolyLearn, the online class resource for Cal Poly, is used to display grades to students and is also used to post final grades. Our grader will replace the old project and will interface with Polylearn for easy usage.

Instructors use personal computers or ones given to them by the department to enter their grades. From the instructor side, the grading tool will go to the department server where grades can be fetched and posted. In addition to the department server, the grader will interface with the Cal Poly SIS server, which is where rosters can be fetched and final grades can be posted. At the same time, students who want to use this tool will have their own machines that they will use to ask "what if" questions with regards to their grades.
