1.5.5. Tamarack TestGen 7
TestGen 7 is widely used as a multi-function test generator. TestGen7 allows for
instructors to create tests on paper, electronically, or online. The software can be
integrated with publisher-supplied testbanks. Questions allow for customized text, symbols,
graphics, and equations; templates are also provided within the software window. A random
generator provides the option for the instructor to display different text or number values
for a selected question for a high degree of flexibility. Other features include a test bank,
on-page test editing, and testbank editing. The layout is reminiscent of an older Microsoft Office
application, making it easier to navigate for users experienced with similar products.
Overall, TestGen7 provides an acceptable level of test-tool functionality. It
does not include an interface for the student to work on and does not offer any functions to
grade generated tests.
Good Features:
-
supported on both Windows and Mac OSX platforms
-
wide array of formatting options when generating tests
-
allows for ease of integration with publisher-supplied testbanks
-
randomized generation for variables available for dynamic questions
-
allows for on-page editing and direct test-bank editing
-
tests can be exported into various file types, including those of competitive companies like
BlackBoard.
-
Fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, T/F, and free answers all supported
Bad Features:
-
user interface is outdated, cluttered, and unappealing. There are a surplus of icons and buttons
to work with, making it difficult for the user to find what the functionality of each is.
-
multi-window viewing and single-window viewing inconsistent (hard to determine how to change
between windows or toggle view)
Missing Features:
-
import large amounts of questions or previous tests
-
interface for the student to work with
-
question generation related to coding (i.e, scripts)
