1.5. Related Systems

Widely used commercial systems that provide functionality comparable to the Test Tool include

Each of these systems provides a wide variety of test-generating, test-taking, and test-grading functionality. In terms of such functionality, the goal for the Test Tool is to provide the important core features found in these tools, not the full range of features found in all of them. The Test Tool does provide modest functional improvements in three areas, when compared to most commercially available tools. These improvements are:

  1. functionality in all three areas: test-generating, test-taking, and test-grading. Other systems may provide at least one of the features, but not always all three.

  2. more flexibility in adding/deleting grades.

  3. extensive features in enabling the teacher to customize the test-taking experience for the student.

The goals for the Test Tool relating to public domain source code and sound pedagogical development are not met by any of the above commercial systems.

A detailed review of each related tool follows in these subsections:

Following these reviews, a summary of the features is provided in a feature comparison matrix.
