1.5.5. W3Schools Tutorials
W3Schools is a tutorial site which provides "well organized and easy to
understand online Web tutorials based on W3C Web standards." It has a very basic
web-based approach to teaching.
This site defines a useful organizational framework for navigation and supports
interactive samples. However, it provides no tutorial authoring functionality
and is therefore insufficient for the CSTutor's needs.
Good Features:
-
provides a simple framework for browsing
-
provides Previous and Next links on every tutorial page
-
where script examples are present, provides interaction - clicking the link
brings up a new page that allows the script to be edited and displays the result
-
displays the tutorial "timeline" in the navigation bar and highlights the
current step
-
allows for a quiz at the end of a tutorial - shows the questions as well as any
incorrect answers, but does not display the correct answer or provide a link to
the corresponding tutorial section
-
provides a site-wide search option
Bad Features:
-
is fairly busy - a significant portion of the information on each page is taken
up by tables of links or advertisements, causing a good deal of clutter
-
appends multiple unrelated advertising sections to the end of each tutorial page
Missing Features:
-
does not provide any tutorial creation or customization options
-
does not support user accounts and therefore does not allow access restriction
-
does not provide any tracking services
-
does not provide chat room functionality
