1.5.5 IBM developerWorks Java Tutorials
Providing web-based tutorials, IBM's developerWorks site is aimed at teaching useful Java skills to programmers.
The developerWorks website does not offer the option of generating tutorials to its visitors, but it is a good example of the type of tutorial commonly found on the internet. One of its best features is the option of downloading the tutorial in any of a number of different formats. Unfortunately, the tutorials do not quiz the student at any point in time, and do not allow for the running of student-written code.
Good Features:
- Estimated tutorial length provided
- Tutorials available in various formats (HTML, PDF, et cetera) before the tutorial begins and while the student is taking it
- Student prerequisites listed
- Links to related tutorial topics provided
- Contact with the creator of the tutorial is provided for
- Navigation includes "Next", "Previous", and "Next Section" buttons
- Links back to main and section menus available at all times
- Each tutorial listed as either "Introductory", "Intermediate", or "Advanced"
Bad Features:
- Almost all tutorial topics are outside of the scope of CSC 101-103
- All tutorials made by IBM, no professor input possible
- Navigation is clumsy
Missing Features:
- Navigation does not include a "Previous Section" button; must return to section menu to go back
- Does not quiz the student at any point in time
- Does not allow for the testing of code within the tutorial
- Does not offer communication between students or realtime contact with tutorial creator
- Student progress is not saved
