2.4 Notes

Figure 1: The default view of the Note-taking window.

Contents of the Note Window when first opened
  • Looseleaf-paper area - Section where the notes are typed in
  • Page Tab - Tab that symbolizes a new sheet of notes.
  • "S" button - Saves the notes to a desired location
  • "+/- Tab" bar - Pull down bar to either add or delete a Tab
  • Flag button - Sets a "Flag" pointer in the notes that references to a slide
  • Normal bar - Pull down bar that changes the style of the text (Normal, Bold, Italics, Bold Italics)

    A sample demonstration of how the student will use the Note Window
    When the user accesses a new Note Window, the window appears as show in Figure 1. The font style is set to "Normal" and only one Tab exists.
    The user wants to name the page of notes, so the page tab is right-clicked, which allows the user to rename the tab to "Chapt. 1"
    The user begins typing notes by clicking on the looseleaf-paper area and starts typing any neccessary notes from lecture (Figure 2).

    Figure 2: Sample text typed

    Later on, the student wants to change the style to italics, so the student clicks and drags the "Normal" pull down bar to "Italics", and resumes typing (Figure 3).

    Figure 3: Font changed to Italics

    When the user feels like he or she needs a new sheet of notes for a new section, the "+/- Tab" bar is pulled down to "Add Tab". This creates a new Tab on the right side of the window, with the name "Tab 2". With a new Page Tab, a new sheet of notes is created. The user renames this to "Chapt. 2" (as shown in Figure 4).

    Figure 4: New Tab Created (Chapt. 2)

    If the user wishes to, he or she may add as many tabs as he or she wants. The Window can hold up to 8 tabs at one time, but when the 9th tab is created, a down arrow appears underneath the 8th tab to scroll down to more tabs.
    The user now feels like he or she made a mistake and wants to throw away the notes from "Chapt. 2", so the "+/- Tab" is pulled down to "Del. Tab", which the user can now click on the Tab that he or she wants to delete. The user clicks the "Chapt. 2" tab and the window now has one less tab (as seen in Figure 1).

    The user wishes to bookmark a lecture slide in the notes, so the user clicks on the Red Flag button on the bottom. A red dot will appear where the current cursor is (Figure 5). In this case, the user used the arrow keys to position the cursor to place the red dot. This red dot references to the current lecture slide the user is viewing, and will open that slide when the dot is clicked. If the user isn't viewing any slides at the time the Red Flag button is clicked, then no red dot appears.

    Figure 5: A new Flag references to current slide

    When a slide is flagged, the flag symbol will appear on the top right portion of the slide to indicate that the slide is bookmarked (Figure 6).

    Figure 6 : A Flagged Lecture Slide (Current slide when "Flag" button clicked)

    After the class is over, the user wants to save the notes to an external device to take home. The student then would click the bottom button labeled "S" for Save. As soon as the user clicks the "S" button, a dialogue box appears, asking where to save the notes (Figure 7). Here the user specifies the name of file, and the address the user wants to save the notes at.

    Figure 7: The Save Window

    The notes are saved as a text file. Inside the file, the format looks similar to this:

    /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
    Your Tab Name:
    /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
    Your Notes...........................................
    .............................................................
    .............................................................

    /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
    Your Next Tab Name:
    /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
    Your Notes...........................................
    .............................................................
    .............................................................

    The user now has a saved copy of the notes, and is ready to log out.
