1.5.3. DyKnow Vision
DyKnow Vision is an education-oriented lecture tool including many of the desirable features for our eClass application. Being education-oriented, it is better fit for professors than many other competing tools, such as GoToMeeting and the like, since it has features such as grading and understanding-checks.
DyKnow Vision is one of the better tools for the electronic classroom experience, perhaps rivaled only by Elluminate. It, like others, is more remote classroom oriented, though, intended more to be run on a home computer, whereas our application is intended primarily for in-class use.
Good Features:
-
Quizzing/polling can be done at any point during class (similar to iClicker which is widely used on campus).
-
Students can hand in work to the teacher, which the teacher can then make notes on and return to the student. Potentially useful for in-class quizzing that involves more than just multiple choice.
-
Teacher has the ability to show a student's workspace on the main board, or to allow the student to mark on the teacher's whiteboard.
-
Students can chat with one another.
-
Students can annotate all documents, on the document.
-
Powerpoint slides can be imported.
-
Remote access - students who are unable to attend lecture physically, can still follow along.
-
All parts of the lecture/presentation (including brushstrokes in real-time) are recorded and uploaded to servers maintained by DyKnow, where students can access old lectures and completely replay them.
-
Records audio.
-
Shared group workspaces.
Bad Features:
-
It has the ability for teachers to grade students' work, but doesn't seem to have a gradebook feature or an easy way to export grades to something like that, making the teacher manually enter grades.
-
Besides Powerpoint importing, there doesn't seem to be a ton of document formats supported.
Missing Features:
-
Does not record video.
-
Voice-to-text transcription.
-
Controls on what students can do during a lecture, the ability to lock out a student, etc.
-
Real-time button to measure the class's understanding of the material as it is presented.
-
The ability to start other, smaller chat rooms.
