1.5. Related Systems

Widely used commercial systems that provide functionality comparable to the eClass include

Each of these systems provides a wide variety of online education functionality. In terms of such functionality, the goal for the eClass is to provide the important core features found in these tools, not the full range of features found in all of them. The eClass does provide modest functional improvements in three areas, when compared to most commercially available tools. These improvements are:

  1. more flexible and interactive lecture slide navigation with integrated drawing and note taking;
  2. integration with the official Cal Poly rosters to automatically set up classes, and sort atendees based on who is official enrolled, who is crashing, and who is attending from home;
  3. a lockout feature to ensure that students are not distracted by other applications.

The goals for the eClass relating to public domain source code and sound pedagogical development are not met by any of the above commercial systems.

A detailed review of each related tool follows in these subsections:

Following these reviews, a summary of the features is provided in a feature comparison matrix.
