There are two operational settings for the TestTool: (1) Use by teachers; (2) Use by students. The TestTool is designed specifically to be used by Cal Poly's computer science department, other departments on the campus, and other universities and educational settings.
The TestTool is intended to be installed on teachers' computers, where the teacher will write and manage the test questions. The tests are on the teacher's network drive and administered from there to be online by students via LAN. The students will be able to download their completed and graded tests from the secure central server in a format viewable using the student tools supplied with the test tool. The student can view that test, as well as any notes written on the test by the teacher.
Apart from having tests stored on the central server to be released during the testing time, the servers will also hold question banks that can be shared between other teachers that use the TestTool program. Additionally, students may download practice tests from a network to take at home using the student environment of the TestTool
Students may take proctored tests in pre-configured room for test taking, which have a specific administrator computer with access to the secure server. This computer is used by the teacher to set up the proctored test, and all other computers in the room have limited access, for test-taking purposes only.
