Malta/Gozo

Site 14: Birgu

This site was explored in 2006. Several cisterns were located around the same building. One cistern contained some interesting sculpted entryways. It is unclear whether there is some purpose for these shapes, or if their purpose is purely aesthetic. Note the wall material is red with the white spots. There is obvious sediment layering on the bottom; layers of black, white and red. Metal artifacts are found in one chamber with slanted walls. Also, the overhead construction in one cistern seems unusually elaborate. A video composite from the different cisterns can be found here.
