Malta/Gozo

Site 20: Gozo Citadel - Fortress Top

This access point was located outdoors, just down the road from site A and B. Although the cistern was really small, it contained more than 5 feet of water. This cistern's floor was covered with pieces of pottery. We managed to pick up two pottery samples using the micro-manipulator (gripper) that we installed on one of the ROVs. Both of the pottery samples featured a gray inner strip, which could mean that the pottery pieces date back to ancient times. The gray inner strip is typical of ancient pottery pieces, since ancient pottery makers did not yet have the technology to properly oxidize the entire piece. A short video of what the robot saw during the 2009 expedition can be found here.
