Slides Chapters 1-6 Available

I just noticed that most of the links on the Schedule page didn’t work; this should be fixed now. You can also go to the directory http://users.csc.calpoly.edu/~fkurfess/Courses/484/S12/Slides/, where you’ll find Keynote, PowerPoint, and PDF versions of the slides.

Guest Speaker on Thu, April 26, 3:00pm: A.J. Bernheim Brush, Microsoft - Technology for Everyday Problems

On Thu, April 26, 3pm in the ATL (007) we’ll have a guest speaker through CRA-W Distinguished lecture series. This is during our regular class time (on purpose), and I expect all students to attend the talk. There is also a possibility that Dr. Bernheim Brush will visit us in class after the talk, if her schedule permits that.

Technology for Everyday Problems
For families, seemingly simple questions like “Are we free for dinner next Saturday?” or “Can you pick the kids up when I have a late meeting” can be difficult to answer.  Inspired by challenges I face in my own life, I study and build technology for homes and families.  In this talk I will present two research prototypes that my colleagues at Microsoft Research and I have built to address challenges faced by individuals and families using technology in their homes:  LINC a digital family calendar, and PreHeat which uses occupancy sensing to control home heating. More generally, I will describe my research process including how we start each project by understanding user needs and then build a prototype and study its use by families to gather feedback.

A2 Presentations on UCD Tools

We'll do the A 2 presentations during Week 4 primarily in the lab. By default, we'll proceed in the order in which the teams are listed on the Project Teams page.
You can put the presentation material on your team’s TRAC wiki (if you want to make it publicly available), or via PolyLearn (where it is only available to this class and hopefully to students in future 484 classes). Most likely, we’ll use the Semantic Media Wiki for overview information and links to the detailed material. The accompanying material for the presentation must be available on the respective repository at the time the presentation is given. The teams will have an opportunity to revise their presentation materials in response to feedback given by class mates and possibly the external customers.
Please use the
A2 Presentation Feedback form for feedback on the presentations.
