CSC 307 Final Exam Overview

• The final exam times are Monday 10:10AM-1PM for the morning section of 307, and Wednesday 1:10-4PM for the afternoon section.

• The exam will be cumulative over all material covered during the quarter.

• The exam will be given entirely on paper, in the lecture rooms, 14-249 or 45-205E.

  As on the midterm, you can bring some material to assist you during the exam. Specifically, you can bring:

  1. A copy of your own graded midterm.

  2. A copy of the sample midterm and its answers.

  3. A copy of the sample final and its answers.

• The style of the questions on the the final will be similar to those on the midterm, i.e., some short-answer and some longer answer.

• There is a sample final posted that is typical of previous 307 exams:

  Note again that this year's final will be entirely on paper. You'll be asked a similar type of coding question as is on the sample, however the question on this year's final will be taylored to a paper-based answer rather than a computer-based answer.

• Some or all of the following topics will be covered on this year's exam:

  • Midterm topics, as outlined in the midterm study guide ; NOTE that no more than 30% of the final exam will be devoted to these topics
  • General design concepts and terminology, as discussed in Notes 6 and 7 , the Calendar Tool examples , and related Java and tutorial readings.

  • Design diagramming with package diagrams, class diagrams, and dataflow diagrams, as outlined in java as a spec language and illustrated in the notes.

  • Use of design patterns:
    • Information-Processing Tool
    • MVP
    • Observer/Observable
    • the role of Java library classes and interfaces in design patterns
    • NOTE there will be NO questions on the "classic" design pattern terminology discussed in notes Week 11

  • Details of model/view design and implementation, including some coding details:
    • model/view design
    • use of exception handling
    • use of Java library packages for model data representation
    • use of Java library packages for view implementation

  • Testing, as covered in Notes 8 and 9, and the examples:
    • formal specification of methods using pre- and postconditions
    • unit testing plans and implementation
    • class testing plans and implementation
    • integration testing
    • testing terminology
    • testing coverage

  • Concepts of version control using SVN, as covered in the SVN basics handout
