This scenario shows an instructor using the Runnable CodeSegment Tool. The Runnable CodeSegment Tool is design to incorporate actual JAVA programming experiences into CSTutor. A Runnable CodeSegment within a Node is a more than just a simple box. It is displayed in a consistant manner by the system so that students will know that the code that is within it is compilable and runnable within CSTutor. Figure 1 below shows a standard Runnable CodeSegment item in CSTutor.

A Runnable CodeSegment is comprised of the following elements to the user:

• Surrounding grey area, denoting that within it is Runnable CodeSegment.
• A TextArea with inactive/active scrollbars always present, program codes is contained in the TextArea.
• A "run" button to execute program code when entered into the TextArea.

The instructor wants to create a Runnable CodeSegment within an InfoNode. To do this they activate the Runnable CodeSegment Tool on the NodeTools toolbar (or select "Authoring -> Node Tools -> Code Segment" from the CSTutor menusystem).
