1.4 Impacts
This section will outline both positive and negative impacts of a CS Tutor deployment.
Positive Impacts:
- Any time / Any where access – CS Tutor will enable students to go through academic content whenever they want. In contrast to an actual classroom situation, CS Tutor system wouldn’t restrict students to stick on to a specific schedule.
- No need of an instructor presence – Students may not need to wait for the instructor to give specific instructions/tips, this will eliminate/reduce the need of the instructor office hours.
- Repetitive usage – Users will have the benefit of accessing the content over and over again.
- Can assess yourself constantly – Using the evaluation quizzes deployed within CS Tutor system users will get the opportunity to periodically assess themselves.
- Easy update and student progress monitoring capabilities – Instructors will be able to update the content easily and rapidly, and also using the system features instructor will get the opportunity to monitor the students’ progress.
- Provides additional, anonymous help to students who are reluctant to seek help in person, out of concern that they might be embarrassed about their ignorance and/or lack of understanding.
Negative Impacts
- May lead to a total dependency – Student users may try to totally depend on the system without getting any consultation from the instructor. CS Tutor will not serve as a replacement for the instructor led class session.
- Possible abuse/ plagiarism – Users may try to abuse the system occasionally, especially when it comes to quiz taking. Users will get the opportunity to go back and forth between quizzes. This would be positive issue in one hand, but on the other hand this may lead to some negative outcomes.
- Misinterpretation of the content – Users may get the wrong idea about specific contents or grab wrong concepts due to the online/virtual nature of the system.
- Labor intensive nature of the system – Instructors job may be labor intensive; this may possibly lead to outdated content or broken URL’s.
- Potential breaches of privacy. If the security of the system is breached, private information such as grades, quiz scores, and student progress, could be released to the general public.
