1.5 Related Systems
There are several off-the-shelf systems that are similar to CS tutor. We evaluated the following:
- W3Schools
- WikiHow
- Google Guide
- Online Tutorial, Language (C++ tutorial)
- Cisco Network Academy Program
- Claroline
- Try Ruby! (in your browser)
All of these systems have at least one functionality similar to a desired CStutor feature. Most, if not all, features that the finished CS tutor will implement are in at least one of these systems. However, none of them completely meets the needs that CStutor will fulfill.
We hope to combine features from each system to create a tool that would be of the utmost use to Cal Poly professors. Here are things we hope to improve upon:
- We hope to revolutionize tutorial navigation with CSTutor, using graphical roadmaps for each student, to give them a visual guide of where they need to go.
- We hope to integrate coding questions and examples into quizzes and tutorials, in a way that they can be edited and compiled in-place and in real time, and in a way that also displays the pertinent output
- We hope to integrate an online, teacher-led tutorial, with chat and remote desktop connection capabilities, into CSTutor.
- A detailed review of each related system is in the following subsections:
- A bird's-eye view of how the related systems compare is available in the feature comparison matrix.
