1.1 Problem Statement

The E-Class was conceived with the following goals in mind:

  1. providing a lecture tool for professors with the ability to track student attendance, present lectures, moderate student questions, and communicate with students all geared to extend administrative control over the classroom.

  2. creating a notepad where students can create memos that will be save to the presentation in a slide-by-slide format. This will provide a study tool for students where they can access the professor's lecture while also viewing notes from a remote location.

  3. eliminating the need of paper in the classroom.

  4. offering a shared 'whiteboard' space where students and instructor can share visual representations of classroom concepts.

  5. extending the ability for students to participate in large classroom environments, as well as, grant students remote access to a lecture.

The E-Class has many tools that have already been implemented by many commercially available applications and this presents a significant problem. Applications such as Pidgin, ScribLink, and BlackBoard have many of the tools that solve many of the problems that E-Class aims to fix and some of these applications are even offered as freeware. However, the E-Class will bring all the functionality of multiple other tools to one application with upgraded features designed and engineered towards educational to grant a professor the following abilities:

  1. viewing an up-to-date roster that will track and store each student’s attendance and allow users to communicate with others that are online.

  2. presenting a lecture that will be remotely displayed to all students and any guests; that can be synchronized at any time.

  3. efficiently answering both anonymous and public questions from students with convenience in real-time.

  4. communicating with students via chat or audio while also being able to view their screen remotely.

  5. drawing on a digital whiteboard and being able to share ideas with other users online.
