2.3.2. Navigating Within Slides

As well as navigating from slide to slide, the instructor can also move around within a slide. The navigation tool bar includes a simple pixel zoom in and out. Also, if an instructor has implemented the current lecture using the advanced features, they can expand and collapse subsections within each slide.

For reference, Figure 2.3.2.1 shows the instructor's navigation toolbar again. Figure 2.3.2.2 shows where the instructor left off in his lecture on the previous page (2.3.1).

Figure 2.3.2.2: Example Slide

This time the instructor navigates through the subsections within the slide in Figure 2.3.2.2. As with the previous section, all of the following changes made by the instructor also appear on every students' whiteboard in the class (even though student screens are not shown in the following examples). After the instructor presses the 'next section' button, the first section in the slide expands.

Figure 2.3.2.3: First Section Expanded

After a brief introduction, the instructor is ready to start talking about Tree Nodes. The instructor hits the 'next section' button again to expand the first subsection within the Tree Overview section.

Figure 2.3.2.4: First Subsection Expanded

The professor proceeds to discuss Tree Nodes with the class. When he finishes he hits the 'next section' button again. The result is the first subsection collapsing and the second subsection expanding. Figure 2.3.2.5 shows the result of this action.

Figure 2.3.2.5: Second Subsection Expanded

The reason why the eClass collapses the first subsection when expanding the second is because there can only be one subsection expanded on the deepest section level at a time. This is to avoid some confusion with layer management, and to provide the user with a better view of the current subsection.

After talking about the top tree node, the professor clicks next subsection again to move on to the leaf nodes section. The next figure shows the result of this action.

Figure 2.3.2.6: Third Subsection Expanded

In this example the subsection expanded the length of the slide past what fits within the borders of the whiteboard. To compensate for this, the whiteboard automatically aligns the header of the subsection to the top of the whiteboard. The borders of the whiteboard also change color at the top and bottom of the slide to indicate to the user that they can scroll up or down to view more content on the slide. This can be done using the dragging tool, which will be discussed in figures 9 and 10 below.

After explaining what a leaf node is to the class, the instructor presses the 'next slide' button yet again. This time the eClass automatically collapses both the Leaf Node subsection and the Tree Overview section, to move on to the next major section. It also expands the Tree Traversal Section. Figure 2.3.2.6 shows the resulting whiteboard.

Figure 2.3.2.7: Second Major Section Expanded

The instructor continues hitting the 'next slide' button and going through each subsection of the Tree Traversal section. Once he reaches the last section and presses the 'next slide' button again, the eClass automatically moves on to the next lecture slide. Figure 2.3.2.7 shows the resulting whiteboard.

Figure 2.3.2.8: The Next Slide

The instructor is tired of using the next slide button to move through the slides, so this time he decides to use the shortcut. He double clicks on the Tree Sketch section header, and the section expands revealing the following screen.

Figure 2.3.2.9: First Section Expanded

Now he wants to zoom in on the image in this section. He clicks on the 'zoom in' button a couple of times, and the eClass zooms in on the center of the slide.

Figure 2.3.2.10: Zoomed In

Then to the instructor clicks on the 'drag' button. This button allows him to click and drag the slide to center the portion he wants to see.

Figure 2.3.2.11: After Dragging to Preferred Location

When the instructor zooms back out, the eClass stops zooming out once it gets back to the original size. It does not allow any user to zoom out past 100% zoom. The eClass also won't allow a user to drag the slide around if it is not zoomed in. It only allows the instructor to scroll down and back up if the slide is too long to display on the whiteboard.
