2.5.2. Statistics

The lower section of the grade sheet gives statistical data for all scores, as seen in a previous figure.

The grade sheet calculates the statistics using the scores from the same column. Once the instructor enters a new score into the column, the grade sheet recalculates the statistics for that column at the same time. The only time the grade sheet does not recalculate the statistics is when the instructor marks a blank entry (explained below).

The data that the grade sheet calculates is:

Data points is the number of non-blank entries in the column. The grade sheet considers a blank entry as an item that the student has not turned in or the instructor has not entered a score yet. The instructor marks blank entries with a hyphen or by leaving the cell empty. Note that the grade sheet does not consider a score of 0 as a blank entry and does tally it into the number of data points.

Mean is the average of all scores in the column. To find this average, the grade sheet divides the sum of the scores by the number of data points.

Median is the middle value when the grade sheet arranges all scores in ascending order.

Standard deviation is the standard deviation of the scores in the column.

Range is the lowest score entered to the highest score entered.
