An administrator sets up a Department Server and SIS Server, which are connected as showing in Figure 2.8.1.1.

The Department Server contains a permission file that contains a list of all users that can access the server for posting and fetching grades. Additionally, the Department Server contains a database of all Gradebooks. Instructors have post and fetch permissions to this database, while students have only fetch permissions to this database.
Instructors submit final grades to the SIS server at the end of each quarter. Students do not have any permissions on this server, and instructors can only submit grades for the classes they instruct.
