1.4. Impacts

The potential positive impacts of the Grader are improved productivity for the instructor as grade entry and curves are easier to manage. The grade submission process is also expedited due to the fact that grades can be directly uploaded to SIS, instead of using the current web-based system utilized by Cal Poly Faculty. Also, students experience increased convenience because they no longer have to attend office hours to check their grades or waste time calculating what grades they need on future assignments in order to get the final grade they desire. In addition, the integrated electronic turn-in of student work allows for a streamlined process in which instructors and students can access returned work with comments as opposed to individual stand-alone systems utilized by some CSC faculty.

Potential negative impacts include a breach of privacy. If the records of student information are somehow leaked, privacy is compromised and there becomes an issue with identity theft as well. Corruption of data is also an issue because re-entering data is very troublesome and busy instructors may not have time to do so.

The electric submission of assignments opens the possibility of students modifying turn in dates to avoid being penalized. Grades may also be intercepted as they are being transferred among local and server machines. These issues would cause trouble if they occurred, but they are faced by the current systems used as well, and steps can be taken to minimize the risk.
