1.5.2 Logos Facility Scheduler Review

The Logos Facility Scheduler is designed to aid the scheduling of the use of various rooms in a facility along with the times and days that the room will be in use.  It appears to be designed primarily with churches in mind, but could work perfectly well for other institutions looking to schedule their rooms.  If you wish to schedule a meeting, or class, or other event in a room, you can quickly and easily choose the room, time, and date for when you’d like that event scheduled.  It also allows you to request specific equipment for the room.  And of course appropriate comments and other additional information can be added.  It even allows you to schedule an “off-campus” event where you input extra information such as the event’s location and the transportation situation.  After you have told the program all the appropriate information about the event to be scheduled, it checks to see whether there are any conflicts with your choice of room, or time, or date, etc and if not, schedules the event.

Once events have been scheduled, you can easily view what has been scheduled.  You pick the room that you’d like to view from a list of rooms.  You also choose the desired date by clicking on a nice little calendar.  Logos Facility Scheduler then presents you with the scheduled events in a nice graphical format with boxes for the events and the times blocked out on the left like in a graph.  You can also choose between daily, weekly, preview, monthly, yearly, and list views for the schedule.  All in all, events can be scheduled and viewed fairly easily.  However, as nice as this program is, it would never be able to help a university create its schedule of classes.

Logos Facility Scheduler is basically a glorified calendar program.  The scheduled events are presented in a format which is quite similar to standard calendar programs.  The main difference is that rooms can be scheduled as well as the time.  Events must be scheduled individually.  The closest that this program comes to automatically generating a schedule is when you specify an event to repeat (at which point it is repeatedly scheduled for the chosen room and time).  Logos Facility Scheduler may be a great program for helping the person who schedules rooms at a church or other fairly small facility where automatic generation of schedules is not necessary, but it will not be of any use to Cal Poly’s Computer Science Department.
