1.3. Operational Setting

There are three operational settings for the Scheduler: (1) For use by the Cal Poly Computer Science Department; (2) use by the Cal Poly campus as a whole; (3) use by other universities that have similar scheduling requirements.

As a University software system, the Scheduler is specifically designed for the Cal Poly Computer Science Department. It it is suitable for use in other departments, and colleges within the University. It is a multi-platform system and runs on all the available systems on campus.

At present the University uses a different software designed to help generate schedules, however, it does not implement many of the features that are now needed by the department. There is also a separate program, PASS, which is used by the students to help plan their schedules for the coming quarter. This program does not need to integrate with any of these current systems, it only needs to bea accessable through the My Cal Poly Portal for proper authentication and access.

The Scheduler incorporates both the generation of schedules for the teachers, the planning of courses, and the ability for a student to generate a schedule for themselves. It does not interface with the existing tools, it replaces them , and meshes them together.
