The 2016-18 ICEX program follows an annual cycle, each year includes a 4 week trip to Malta that takes place during the summer (June). In this trip computer science students will work with engineering students and faculty from Harvey Mudd College (HMC) in the deployment of underwater robot systems capable of mapping coastal shipwrecks. This new project is under development with the robotics side (HMC) focused on developing planning algorithms for AUVs, to maximize information gain when mapping shipwrecks and the computer graphics (Cal Poly) work focused on visualizing the shipwreck maps and ocean environment.
One of the best ways to get a sense of the program is to read the blog from prior trips, for example the 2017 blog can be found here.
For details of the past ICEX project focused on mapping water systems, see the Malta Cistern Mapping web site.

Program Fees:
Students are required to pay $200 (non-refundable after March 30, 2017) for participation in the program. A grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Cal Poly Instructional Related Activities (IRA) program have provided funds to cover the majority of expenses for the program (i.e. accomodations, airfare from LAX to Malta, vehicle rental, food, insurance).
